How to reset safety switch

Resetting a safety switch (also known as an RCD or residual current device) is a straightforward but important task to restore power safely after it has tripped. First, unplug all appliances connected to the circuit protected by the safety switch, as a faulty appliance is often the cause of the trip. Then, go to your switchboard and locate the safety switch—it will usually be labeled and will be in the “off” position. Flip the switch back to the “on” position. If it stays on, plug your appliances back in one at a time to identify if a particular item causes it to trip again. If the switch trips immediately after resetting or won't reset at all, it could indicate a more serious electrical fault, and you should call a licensed electrician to investigate. Safety switches are designed to protect you from electric shock, so never bypass them or ignore repeated tripping.

Safety Switch Installation Cost – How Much Does It Cost?

The cost of installing or repairing a safety switch depends on:

  • The number of circuits needing protection.

  • New installation vs. replacement.

  • Additional electrical work (e.g., switchboard upgrades).
